@doq I think "they" are working on proxies to address that problem.

@BrodieRobertson Which Linux distro would you recommend? Most Linux distros have dropped 32-bit support. AFAIK every PC which runs Windows 7 but not a newer Windows version has a 32-bit CPU.

@BrodieRobertson For some reason I was under the impression Debian was dropping 32-bit x86. Maybe it's something they were considering at some point. Or it's just that I'm annoyed they bumped the requirements to a 686. Close to a decade ago I had an install running on an old K6 laptop so that bothered me. Fortunately for people still using these older systems as daily drivers the retro value has increased so that you could sell one and buy a faster Pentium 4 or newer system and come out ahead with a few dollars.

@BrodieRobertson On a practical matter that's debatable. It's easy to find updated user software for Windows 7 but not so on EOL Linux distributions. However Firefox seems like it will probably drop W7 support next year while the current Debian stable will go far beyond that so it's a moot point. There are some systems which will run Windows 7 but not current Debian where this would be an issue except AFAIK they don't even meet 7's official minimum specs so nobody in their right mind will be using them for real work. However Steam is a different story. Some games work just fine on 7 but not or not as well as on newer OS. If I bought a game online in 2012 which required Windows 7 but now I can't run it because Steam no longer runs I would be far from happy. Hopefully Valve provides some sort of legacy client so people can continue playing their already-bought games without resorting to piracy.

Honestly my silliest problem with the Wayland desktop is its name. The town it is named after will always take precedence in my mind.

Searching information about X is still easier than the $9 SBC named 'Chip'.

The Wayland protocol is always going to require compositing. Assuming they implement it well I don't think it's an issue. And for whatever it's worth Windows 8 and later also requires compositing.

Can't you use XWayland for 99.9% of X-only user applications? I've never tried but this was my impression.
