  1. Who says they were source disks? Microsoft used their own source control system (Source Library Manager) so it would be stored centrally.

  2. Win9x, in its normal mode of operation, accesses the internal state of DOS directly. This probably won't work too well if you use a different DOS. It is possible to run without this functionality but this makes the system freeze whenever you perform disk accesses.

  3.  @kyle8952  I'm presuming they had IBM-branded PC-DOS, not the "generic" MS-DOS.
