  1. ​ @Stroopwafe1  More modern airbag systems also have multistage actuators which will deploy differently depending on the characteristics and severity of the crash. This can't practically be done with a mechanical system.

  2. I think there should be a mechanical backup but for normal operation brakes are modulated and/or boosted for antilock brakes, traction control, etc. And for cars with traction batteries, blending between regen and friction brakes.
