Many of these do work with modern security standards. In a ThinkPad T30 I was able to get WPA2 working even though it's only 802.11b.

@terrydaktyllus1320 Yes in Linux, on the then-latest Debian (probably Wheezy). I was also trying to make it work in XP but IIRC the latest I could get there was WPA1. That would've also needed a firmware update and I don't remember if it actually worked or not.

IIRC the "IBM" 802.11 card available in the ThinkPad T30 used the hostap driver and with a firmware update it works with WPA2. While not fast it should still be compatible with modern networks and is plenty for SSH and more limited browsing. You don't need to be a complete weirdo to use one and I'm sure people do.

@BrodieRobertson Define "modern kernel". The average user isn't compiling their own kernel but they will likely run the latest version available in their distro. I would be running Debian and wouldn't hear about the change until the next version comes out in two years and I go to upgrade.

I hope they don't decide to remove the ipw2x00 or b43 drivers anytime soon. I was regularly using my Inspiron 8600 (with Intel 2200 Wi-Fi) on the go until March 2020. I was using Windows but if my life situation hadn't changed to not need a mobile laptop I probably would have switched to the latest Debian due to the EOL of Windows 7.

Many laptop BIOSes have hardware whitelists which prevent upgrades without modifications. Also, we'd be talking about mPCI (not express) here where selection is more limited.
