  1. Cogeneration is another way to provide heat, and can work well with heat pumps. If power plants have 44% efficiency, the remaining 66% of energy is waste heat at the power plant. If this heat is piped into homes instead of directly into the atmosphere we'd have less need for a heater in the first place. I just don't know why this is so uncommon, it seems so obvious. It's not like it's too hard for us to extract the extra energy, that's exactly how the heating on a typical car works.
