A tip from when I did this: bundle all your 'dock' cables into one using cable ties/wrap or whatever. It keeps things tidy. Also USB hubs are your friend (and many monitors have built in hubs.) Power, video, and USB are all you need.

And if you do get a blue screen, you can just press the appropriate key to continue. P.S. If you never want a blue screen you can just change the color: https://web.archive.org/web/20080112185307/http://support.microsoft.com/kb/90740

You don't need to bring a gas generator with you on the go. Eighty pounds of lead acid batteries will let you compute in silence for hours.

I'm surprised actually. I would think the button is too small. I suppose you could just tape a coin or something over it. Or, just turn the 'dock' upside down.

I believe when Alec is mentioning USB-C he is referring to the connector and not the USB 3 SuperSpeed protocol. These docks rely on the 'alternate modes' of USB type C to transmit video. I don't see any reason why his setup would need USB 3 over 2 (except for Gigabit Ethernet). Regarding Thunderbolt, I would presume ARM-based systems from Apple will still support it.

Yes. I think it actually worked pretty well for me (but then again I didn't use it much.) IIRC I could use it for text but video was unusable. I actually have two DisplayLink adapters nearby, one is part of a USB 2.0 "dock."

I believe each USB controller can handle up to 127 devices, so number of devices most likely will not be a bottleneck. If you want to have 1440p at 144Hz, I think most adapters supporting 4k@60Hz will work. Both modes use about the same bandwidth. This probably means DisplayPort 1.3.
