You could have it set up to turn on a light when you get out of bed.

Hey Alec, don't you usually put the corrections in the pinned comment? I have some fodder for you: 1. (9:44) You refer to a "sixteen pin chip" but I can only find an eighteen pin chip. 2. (10:05) As has already been mentioned, TRIACs turn the current on, not off, midwave. 3. (6:59) The ring in the tube circuit is insulated. On line 47 of the first column of text in the patent, it is specified that "the base 5 is made of ceramic, glass or some other insulating material." 4. (13:22) You couldn't connect the sensing electrode to a refrigerator because the refrigerator is (Hopefully) grounded. 5. (7:57) I doubt the tube circuit would have used 10-20 watts when idle. A tube similar to a 12AX7 could be used, which has a heater consumption of only 1.9 watts and a max anode dissipation of 1 watt per section. I would expect closer to five watts for the power consumption of the entire circuit. As a side note, the English WIkipedia page 'Touch-sensitive lamp' has seen significant improvements since this video has been published.
