Yes, definitely regulate flicker on exterior lighting. I assume you're talking about slow PWM that's sometimes used.

My thought was using the vehicle speed sensor (the thing driving the speedometer and odometer) which won't require any extra sensor hardware. The individual wheel speed sensors used for ABS would provide four separate inputs for extra redundancy if desired.

@man_eating_monkey You can cause damage if you are moving at high speed and then switch to a too low range if you're using an ancient pure-mechanical automatic transmission. Anything made in the past 30 or so years is going to be computer-controlled. Unless it's already malfunctioning you can't cause any damage by commanding a downshift.

I can provide one solid data point that an always lit dashboard on a new car combined with daytime running lights leads to forgetting to turn on the headlight.

The big problem with all the Tesla cars is that they are made by Tesla Motors. They're a very consumer unfriendly company who are basically single-handedly responsible for the impression that EVs are hard to repair.

@benc1927 I've always heard it was hard to get parts if you're not an authorized repair center. It's possible they've gotten better in the past few years or in certain market areas. May I ask where you are located and what your repair was?
