@kyleflounder9783 Confused about rotary phones? You put your finger over the number you want to dial, rotate it to the fingerstop, then release to dial a digit. It's easy to use (although I've never actually dialed a live phone). Internally there's a governor to regulate the pulsing speed, and a switch opens once per pulse transmitted.

@christopherdahle9985 I doubt your central office has the same old switchgear as the Connections Museum, they're pretty confident they have the last remaining panel and 1XB switches. 5XB is much more plausible. And running a magnetron on PWM? It would technically work but my understanding is magnetrons electrically behave like LEDs (but also have filaments). Meaning they have a relatively constant voltage drop when running (a few kV) and rely on external current limiting provided by the transformer and the doubler's capacitor. What I'm saying is high-frequency PWM is somewhat impractical as it would interfere? with the original current limiting. There's a reason microwave manufacturers use low frequency (0.067 Hz in my case) PWM instead.

The second knob could be power level. Real power level with a rheostat, not power cycling like digital ones do.
