  1. CR and LF have different functions. The carriage return code resets the horizontal and the line feed code increments the vertical. And a bit related the delete (7F) code is all ones and (originally) does nothing. If you punched the wrong thing onto paper tape you could punch out the rest of the holes and the computer would ignore this.
