Honestly if he started taking it apart he would most likely find the packet of basic service data. That would include a wiring diagram with the answers he is looking for.

@kensmith5694 On modern ones I'm sure there actually is a counter. Not a countdown but more like a car odometer, providing useful information for servicepeople. If the machine has gone through 10,000 wash cycles you could assume the mechanisms are more likely to be worn out and might need replacement.

Are we getting a Connextras video on thermostat heat anticipators? They're basically the same thing (but obviously much more dependent on room temperature), switching the heat on and off with proportional duty cycle control instead of purely based on room temperature.

I haven't seen it in a computer but in a repair video I did see a bimetallic thermostat used for fan speed control in a 1970s amplifier. A simmerstat would be a bad idea because the constant change in fan speed would be annoying.

@arantala As long as there's a temperature difference the heat will make its way out eventually. The only question is how quickly and how much leaves via radiation or via conduction/convection. The only real loss in transfer efficiency is the amount of heat lost via conduction to the underside of the stove. AFAIK it is worse with lower temperatures but with thermal insulation I don't think it's enough to really matter.
