@MusicByproduct Temperature is one of the factors in degradation. if you charge regular batteries at high C rates they heat up, accelerating their demise. In modern EVs the cells are liquid cooled and sometimes also connected to the air conditioning system.

That will depend the most on how often you drive. An easier metric is how much it costs per mile/kilometer if you charge at home. An "average" figure for EVs is 200Wh per km or 320 Wh per mile. If a kWh of electricity costs ten cents then each mile would be 3.2 cents. Or if you drive 12,000 miles a year you'd be paying a bit more than a dollar per day at these rates.

FMVSS in the US require that you can't drive when charging. Even if not required many cars retask some of the motor electronics for driving, making it physically impossible to charge when driving. Although having said this, it would occasionally be useful to charge when driving. It would let you use an ordinary gas generator as a range extender if needed.

When the car isn't running a contactor in the battery pack physically disconnects the electricity which increases safety. Commercial EVs also have circuitry which will detect faults including damaged cables which will trigger the same disconnect.

@mattdaddy_888 If you cut into the bright orange wires you could get a serious shock but needing to do that isn't common. A good analogy might be high pressure lines on a diesel or gasoline direct injection engine. Hydraulic injection injuries can kill and worse yet it's easy to be unaware of such an injury when it happens. Ultimately you really shouldn't be working on any dangerous machinery if you aren't careful and take precautions.

@mattdaddy_888 Discharging the battery won't do much in terms of shock safety. If you need to work inside the battery pack then you should probably use gloves and fully-insulated tools if you want to ensure safety. I would think many mechanics would remove the pack as a whole and take it to an independent battery shop if refurbishment is necessary.

Alec addressed people without dedicated charging spots in the video.

The connectors are all recessed so nothing is exposed when it could be live. They also have protection like GFCI/RCD in case something were to go wrong.
