Even though Noctua has rubber on the corners the screws thread directly into the main plastic body. That doesn't really stop vibration transfer but the stretchy mounting "pins" do. So unless I'm not mistaken the built-in isolators only work if the fan is held in without screws, like maybe the spring clips found on some tower CPU coolers.

@perrytheplatypus8802 JD had a good reason this time. The issue is that they might not next time.

I believe that's not actually the case. NUT alters the shutdown sequence so the service stays running even after all the filesystems are fully unmounted. If the server is still receiving power it's able to send the shutdown command.

I'm pretty sure they sell brackets that prevent the "unplugged due to tripping on power cord" failure. However they increase the likelihood of the "outlet and plug totally destroyed due to tripping on cord" failure.

Based on my understanding (I haven't looked into it though) the first part is the case. Once the shutdown command is sent the only way back is for the servers to lose power. But the second part is probably not the case. When the UPS receives the shutdown command it probably guarantees that power will be disconnected for at least 'x' time, even if input power comes back before then.

There is, most telecom equipment operates from 48V so many servers can be ordered with 48V PSUs. But note that this isn't as useful as it seems at first. It only skips the conversion inside the UPS, the server PSU still needs to be isolated to prevent ground loops. And then during normal operation you have an extra AC->DC in addition to the normal one. The only way I can see it working well is if your server supports redundant PSUs of two different models. and can be set to use the normal AC one if possible and only draw DC if needed.

Or just plug the network UPS into the main rack UPS.

@BrunodeSouzaLino You really would want tophat-shaped washers (or grommets) to ensure the screw doesn't touch the frame.

@lyianx I suspect this uses a sleeved 18650 cell. Should be pretty easy to install a generic replacement but it might involve a tiny bit of soldering. I suspect most people who would buy this in the first place would be capable of that.

You don't even need to be a ham, when I had an outage I hooked my AM/FM radio to battery and could pick up tons of stations that would normally be hidden by the noise floor.

Is the unraid set to send the poweroff command to the UPS after shutdown?

As long as you respect equipment limitations I don't get why it's bad. The big UPS outputs very clean power and can easily handle the charging current of the small UPS. I also don't see why it's inefficient, as long as the big UPS stays up the only power loss is the idle power of the small UPS.

@Level2Jeff I'm fortunate enough not to have this update yet but it probably won't be too long. I think the real goal of the change is to swap the comments and suggested videos. I can imagine why they'd do something that devotes more space to suggested videos: Comments don't make money but clicking on videos shows new ads.

I'm pretty sure you can set your servers to hibernate when power fails.
