@tommypetraglia4688 - Maybe you also learned to (subconsciously?) use your whole vision, not just your central focus. Peripheral vision is designed to pick up things that look out of place - it's in our evolution of survival supposedly.

@hshs5756 - When stress becomes normal, maybe it is is hard to stay on edge. Maybe others can attest - any WWII commenters here?

@MrWATCHthisWAY - I doubt they had the psych screening advantages of today, too, so probably not all crew members on their first voyage were up to it.

@Deipnosophist_the_Gastronomer - It will never pop out, right?

@Galvars - The poles were able to get posted to USAAF. As far as I know, they were only in China with P-40s (Flying Tigers), but I didn't look it up past that. Later on, somehow, one of them I read about was flying a Mustang. However, I don't know where that happened or how close to then end of the war (not BB).

@bobthompson4319 - That may be a spatial resolution issue, but color differences and movement can help increase the detection.

@michaeldavidson5170 - Your comment can only be applied if "used properly" includes "not used at all". Certainly, some screws simply can't be removed using a screw driver - they will be stripped if an attempt is made.

In incidents like these, the difference between excellent decision making and dumb like is simply in how you choose to see it. When you have seconds to make a key decision, it's sometimes like flipping a coin. Good judgment has nothing to do with it, except for the good judgement to commit to a decision when hedging only makes things worse.
