@tommypetraglia4688 - Maybe you also learned to (subconsciously?) use your whole vision, not just your central focus. Peripheral vision is designed to pick up things that look out of place - it's in our evolution of survival supposedly.

@hshs5756 - When stress becomes normal, maybe it is is hard to stay on edge. Maybe others can attest - any WWII commenters here?

@MrWATCHthisWAY - I doubt they had the psych screening advantages of today, too, so probably not all crew members on their first voyage were up to it.

@bobthompson4319 - That may be a spatial resolution issue, but color differences and movement can help increase the detection.
