Those who cower from the power of their enemies are already subjects of their enemies, even if they have not admitted it. The US cowers in fear of nuclear war, especially without even realizing it can project the threat far more effectively than Putin. You can't guarantee yourself a risk-free life, not even temporarily, by giving away the freedom's of others and sacrificing your own long-term security. That is a fool's gambit and you will lose EVERY time! As a child in NJ, I grew up with the possibility of nuclear destruction in my state, as did many people living near critical facilities for industry, defense, governance, etc. We didn't like it but we knew life has risks and you must learn to live with them even if you wish to minimize them. Now the US is dominated by cowards. They want 100% assurance they will live without the horrors that have plagued humanity. You cannot avoid the possibility of human conflict. If you sacrifice the freedom of foreigners to protect your own, you've only given away an ally and brought your own doom one day closer.

@Kenny-bj2zq - NATO would not, because the GQP would still be more interested in hurling accusations against a private citizen (the Vice-President's son) than in helping a nation defend itself against tyranny. Trump was impeached by Congress for his holding back on Ukraine aid until he got political aid, and the GQP would only double-down if they had a second chance.

@ddss3042 - We politically forced them to give up nuclear weapons. So, we forced them to become defenseless, then we wring our hands later saying, "But we never promised." Horrific.

Exactly! It's all "thoughts and prayers," while abstaining from the true fight for our freedom. I would rather be fighting in combat for Ukrainians, ,who stand up to evil, than live among the cowering masses of the US. My only problem is I can't even do a light jog, so fighting for Ukraine is out of the question. I have had it with all of humanity. Phonies, perhaps 98% of 'em claim to believe in eternal life but won't risk losing their 0%-of-eternity mortal time on Earth to stand up for good. Phonies, phonies, phonies. Our human race is completely hypocritical, a bunch of liars.

I see people whining about we never signed a treaty to defend Ukraine. Yea, well did you ever sign a treaty to save an old lady getting pummeled by a mental case? No. But any decent group of able-bodied would step in and stop it. If you need a treaty to compel you to be decent, you are scum.

I have not heard one explanation that I consider wise as to why the US would EMPHASIZE to Putin that the US will NOT risk engaging its forces in combat due to the risk of nuclear war. Guess what folks. If NATO is attacked, there WILL be a risk of nuclear war. If you have already ABSOLUTELY assured Putin you will not risk nuclear war, then Putin is in your head. He knows it is nuclear war your fear, not just some treaty technicalities. Putin is free to erode the West. He is funding and supporting far-right parties and the GOP in the US. He WILL bring down democracies. You watch and cry. Putin will succeed. When the GOP "centrists" will always avoid conflict with the far-right and when the US will always ensure zero risk of nuclear war with Putin, then in the US and abroad democracy has no effective support EXCEPT in Ukraine! US citizens in the GOP and many in the left are cowards. They are afraid of criticisms from their own political pals and afraid of not being seen as ideological conformists. The US is collectively afraid of sacrifice. In the end, all the phony cheerleading of Ukraine and detaining of yachts (not even taking possession of them) amounts to NOTHING in Ukraine. The cowards in the US and the West get what they deserve - the ongoing rise of autocracy.
