Out and about on the town?

@MrHenhei - Man, that sounds miserable. Even if you disregard the cold, the hyper-extreme dryness would desiccate me. My innermost layer would be skin cream, and it would dry up in about five minutes. My sinuses would ache in in ten, and my nose would bleed every day. But the place sounds lovely otherwise! ;-D

Synthetics are GREAT at odor retention, though. I had a pair of polypro leggings that got soaked in treated sewage water. The water was hygienically safe, but it smelled like sewage. Those leggings never fully lost the smell. I only wore them kayaking, though, so the smell stayed sealed inside the kayak.

Was Grandpa wearing a string vest to venture outdoors or, let's be honest, to go to the Blue Oyster?

I have always love armpit zippers. Let that sweat evaporate out.

Great comment. There is a reason something that is "great" is not being used despite being around for millennia. It must have a downside. You seem to know about one of them. I suspect they are easily snagged on things as well during handling (packing, laundry, etc.), becoming both annoying and maybe more easily ruined.

Clever, but there is a valuable user consideration for using more air and less fabric material for heat retention and moisture transport.

GoreTex uses PFAS that contaminate water supplies around the world! My town's wells are now out-of-range for the safety limits, thanks to waterproofing chemicals used by companies like GoreTex.

Show us the data that demonstrates your effect size of this hypothetical problem is worth worry about. Any fool can invent a self-consistent hypothesis about this health problem or that. That's easily done because you focus on a limited set of rules in your mental model. Try looking at real life, which has an infinite continuum of "rules" including some you will never know about. Thus, you should look at well-designed studies that measure *effect size*.

"Wider" outerwear has an issue that must be considered. It brings excessive fabric into the armpits and groin and squeezes out more air than thinner fabric every time the arms or legs are moved. This can be a problem if you are trying to keep warm air under the fabric, rather than constantly fluffing it back out into the environment after warming it in your hottest body locations.
