The problem with a "good guy with a gun" fantasies promoted by the NRA and gun nuts is they implicitly assume good guys have amazing courage 100% of the time. They don't. Sometimes they even exhibit selfish cowardice.

Nonsense! Those are the good guys with guns! You know, the NRA and gun-obsessives love to tell y'all how the good guys with guns will save the day. Turns out good guys with guns don't want to die, so their powerful instinct to survive seems to override the ideology of "but good guys with guns will stop the shooters". Who would think that it is completely unnatural to run headlong into gunfire? Who would think a good number of cops are so afraid of being shot in the head they sub-consciously (think about that, not consciously) will convince themselves that they must wait until a safer opportunity exists to take on a gunman. Consider the Border Patrol agent who took down the gunman supposedly had a bullet hole in his headgear/hat/helmet(which was it?). Maybe if they had gone to save children earlier, the cops would have died. Who knows. We do know expecting people to sometimes die as "heroes" just so that some OTHER schmoes can own guns is NOT a plan that is working. Children are dying. Time for a new approach. You know, the one that Britain and Australia separately adopted. Lo! Behold, they no longer have school massacres! What a shock! How is this possible? Yes, folks, the gun restrictions SAVE CHILDRENS LIVES. In other words, our current laxity is all it takes to KILL CHILDREN. Our NRA and supporters kill children through their obstinance.

The victims can't sue. Thanks to SCOTUS and a wild interpretation of the Constitution, scumbags are free to do or not do nearly anything remotely connected to their job and never be held accountable for it. Forget asking for "Good Samaritan" heroism, we can't even expect people to do their jobs. But you can bet the union is putting 100% effort into protecting his career.
