Anecdotes (like your personal experience with phosphate-free detergent) are NEVER confirmatory evidence. They can only falsify hypotheses, not confirm them. However, you use your experience as confirmation. That is a gross failure of logic, even if you are using basic probabilistic inferences. I remember when phosphates were banned and my dishwashing machine was frequently gunking up. The filter would be caked. I tried various brands, but nothing helped for a long while. Finally, I grudgingly settled on the brand that had some gunk deposits but they were the least gunk deposits. My experience was probably different than yours due to the water quality. Hard water and soft water have different characteristics. The specific constituents of the water surely matter at least a little bit. I have since moved. The water is different and the same detergent as before now leaves much less gunk.

This would have been a great opportunity to mock the packs that include two or three types of agents, especially the rinse agents. They all dissolve out of the pack at the same time - when the detergent door opens and exposes the pack to water! The rinse agent in the packs is the most ridiculous. You need that in the last cycle, not the wash cycle. In fact, most machines (if not all?) include a container for rinsing agent. I am stunned at the silliness consumers will buy into.
