The teleportation angle is exactly correct and I’m surprised how few people get that. Imagine a VR camera on top of the Eiffel Tower or in a sushi restaurant in downtown Tokyo. People would absolutely pay a few bucks to virtually visit a place.

@MicMaine It's super cool and I really think this is close to the "killer app" for VR. That Apple is jumping into the space is very encouraging for the future of the tech.

@MicMaine Oh I completely agree. I have hated Apple for years and sworn that I would never buy their products. That being said, I'm not blind nor so foolish as to think that my view is the dominant one. My wife is an Apple devotee and loves to buy their stuff. I'm an engineer and work with computer hardware for a living; my wife couldn't name a single programming language. I am not in the majority.

@LilRedRasta Absolutely. I was thinking about the autonomous robot angle walking home today. Seems easy enough; it certainly could be done with today's tech. There's a news angle to this as well. I'm in Israel and at this moment Reuters has at least three separate 24/7 live feeds of Israel's borders. I imagine there is demand for people to see events in 3d, whether it's war or even just things like a presidential inauguration or something.

@Gabrocol true, but not a bad alternative.

@NobodyIsPerfectChooseDignity I think the underlying problem is your assumption that the AI will be controlled. The fundamental laws of physics and, more appropriately in this case, evolution don't care about our desires to control our creation.

All of the cool tech and understanding that comes out of experimental physics is great but I think people often vastly underestimate the value of such work in bringing about a new generation of young scientists. The tens of thousands of people who do graduate or post-doctoral work at places like CERN mostly move on to do other things including working in all sorts of fields of technology that is crucial for building the modern world we know.

It seems to me like there is a lot of overlap with the basic need for ubiquitous and rigorous digital security and rejection of the "internet of things." I take the lesson from Battlestar Galactica; computers are not the problem, it's networked computers that are a problem. Remember that casino that was hacked through the fish tank?

There are some regions of the ocean floor that are very well mapped, but the information is highly classified. Accurate seabed maps play a major role in submarine warfare strategy. Lack of knowledge of sea floor features can lead to major problems if your submarine, for example, runs into a mountain.

I live overseas. During the pandemic I voted online. The next election they didn't allow it so I requested a paper ballot. The ballot came a week after the elections.
