I would argue that the guy who bought a pizza with bit-coin was actually very smart. At that time, the value of the pizza and the value of the bitcoin were comparable. The later increase in bitcoin value was premised in (small) measure on the publicity of things like the pizza purchase. It is reasonable to assume that that guy had more bitcoin that that amount and that he likely continued to trade in it.
