There were several points which are questionable and even conflicting with Turkish sources so i want to mention about them; First of all there are many sources claim Anzac bay landing was intentional to surprise Ottoman forces and it makes sense because Ottoman was indeed not expecting a landing there as it was pretty much suicide against steep hills. And there were very few Ottoman soldiers defending the area, in fact at beginning Anzac forces managed to capture several hills in few hours and started pushing towards Chunuk bair which is one of the highest hills in Gallipoli overlooking entire region, in fact in first day objectives capturing Chunuk bair also existed in Anzac orders which is kinda proving the landing location was intentional: https://ngatapuwae.govt.nz/sites/default/files/stop/media/01%20anazc%20cove%402x.jpg However it was this point their luck ran out as there was Mustafa Kemal Pasha's 19th reserve division at the other side of Chunuk bair and he illegally ordered his reserve division to charge against Anzacs and repel them. While he also illegally took control of units from other divisions in the area and gave them charge orders as well. During that time Mustafa Kemal Pasha was just a lieutenant colonel who was a very good commander but Ottoman high command didn't like him as he wasn't a part of their young turk organization. At first they even refused giving Kemal Pasha a command in Gallipoli but he never gave up and kept requesting again so they finally gave him 19th reserve division to just silence him. And because his division was a reserve division Kemal Pasha had absolutely no authority to order his division to engage enemy until there was an order from his superior officers but he had authority to position his division freely. He chose eastern side of Chunuk bair as he thought it was a crucial hill and it was indeed! However there was still a problem with 19th reserve division, it had 3 regiments 57th infantry regiment which was Turkish. And 72th and 77th infantry regiments regiments which were Arabic. Mustafa Kemal Pasha also requested from Ottoman high command to replace two Arabic regiments with a Turkish regiment but it was once again refused claiming there was no regiment available. You might think it was a racist request but in reality Arabic soldiers didn't know Turkish and translators needed to be used which was significantly delaying their movements and reducing their battle effectiveness. And he was once again right to request such a thing because that few hours almost going to cost a lot when the actual battle began. At the day of landing he waited 6 hours for an order to engage Anzacs but Ottoman high command was in chaos and considering Anzac bay landing as a decoy so there was never an order. Then Kemal Pasha learned Anzac vanguard reached Chunuk bair and if they could capture then fortify the hill Ottoman might not able to capture it back. So he illegally ordered his 19th division to climb Chunuk bair and engage against Anzacs. However because of the reasons i mentioned earlier 57th infantry regiment reached Chunuk bair first but they weren't so lucky as four Anzac regiments reached the hill simultaneously and a terrible hand-to-hand combat began. When Kemal Pasha learned 57th was fighting greatly outnumbered he gave his famous order: ''Men, I am not ordering you to attack. I am ordering you to die. In the time that it takes us to die, other forces and commanders can come and take our place.'' Orders to the 57th Infantry Regiment, at the Battle of Gallipoli (25 April 1915); as quoted in Studies in Battle Command by Combat Studies Institute, US Army Command and General Staff College. And 57th infantry regiment did so, 80% of men were wounded or dead during only two hours long combat but they still managed to repel Anzacs from Chunuk bair! Soon after 72th and 77th also reached Chunuk bair and began fortifying the hill against further Anzac attacks. Other units also managed to repel Anzacs from several less important hills so at the end of day Anzacs got stuck in lower ground against steep hills in everyside. It was so bad Anzac commander officially requested evacuation but it was refused by British high command claiming if Turks spotted a single healthy soldier leaving they would charge and slaughter them all. It wasn't a completely baseless claim but still forcing Anzacs to fight and die in a hole was a better idea?? And that ''extremely successful evacuation'' is such an amusing joke because in reality Ottoman learned about entente evacuation within HOURS but Ottoman high command didn't decide to charge and cause a bloodbath as it was pointless and dishonorable. For same reason Ottoman never used chemical weapons in Gallipoli despite German officers stating many times conditions were perfect for a chemical attack as Anzacs were in lower ground and heavier than air gases posed no threat to Ottoman soldiers!! Im pretty sure even if Anzacs were evacuated first day there wasn't going to be an Ottoman assault to slaughter them. So in short nope, i don't agree Gallipoli was a doomed campaign from start but both British and Turkish factors and historical figures made it so...
