The Catholic church is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths and untold misery by forbidding condoms thus spreading AIDS and by forbidding family control thus people have a great many children that they cannot feed. Non Governmental Agencies truly help far more people than do churches - they are not religious organizations and most of their workers are atheists. Armchair atheists? LOL! There is no such thing.   42. The Afghanistan I lived in in 1971-1972 was a paradise in comparison. No Taliban, no religious extremism. It was a hard, poor but wonderful country. Women weren't forced to wear burqas, many dressed in Western clothing. Schools were filled equally with boys and girls, and there were many brilliant women studying engineering, physics, medicine, science etc., in the University of Kabul. My heart bleeds for this country which I loved.
