my home just has good ol' reliable fuses
9
for example a 1.5mm² cable can easily handle 10a inside a wall but 16a outside a wall
6
why didn't the uk use screw in fuses like europe & america?
3
nowadays the uk is also 230v because continental europe was 220v
3
if it's the 240v single phase split phase then it can work but there's the 60hz problem: if the device says 50/60hz then it'll work just fine if the 50hz device has a motor then it may not work properly or even break if the 50hz device is an ac/dc adapter like an rvl-002(eur), rvl-002(ukv) or rvl-002(aus) then it'll likely still work with 60hz
3
most european houses (& even some apartments) are actually 400v 3 phase
3
@j.r.arnolli9734 what about the oven & stove tops on at the same time? that's why european ranges are usually connected to 3x16a 11kw fuses
3
@nighttow8780 in europe the standard 230v (or 400v) circuits are 16a but 230v 10a circuits also exist because that's still over 2000w
3
because 2 phases can't normally rotate a motor
3
@antaress8128 i doubt c25 is the correct breaker size: 1.0mm² c6 (lights) 1.5mm² c10 (lights & sockets) 2.5mm² c16 (sockets & 3 phase ranges) 4mm² c20 (single phase ranges) 6mm² c25 (main)
3
in europe 3 phase breakers disconnect all phases at the same time
3
in mainland europe most houses & even some apartments get 3 phase 230/400v 50hz
3
aren't those just fuses? tulppasulake?
2
our standard outlets are only 120v
2
most european houses are 230/400v 3 phase
2
what? you have c25 breakers? shouldn't they be c16?
2
@pleappleappleap if the 3 phase motors are 400v 50hz then yes
2
having fuses in plugs is unsafe because if they keep blowing then people will use bigger fuses
1
an elcb only detects current in the earth wire unlike an rcd
1
@AMATISIG what you just described is an rcd
1
the tv uses the same watts (assuming it's the same model) but it uses double the amps which requires thicker wires
1
i think it's because for example 12awg is thinner than 4mm² so the american 20a breakers are faster blow than the european 20a breakers
1
we have 120v 20a 5ma gfci sockets
1
@DavidLeecl nowadays we have not only gfci breakers but also tamper resistant sockets
1
for people who don't speak british english, lift means elevator
1
our ac units are usually connected to 2 phases so they're 208v or 240v
1
what do you mean "common neutral"? each circuit has its own neutral wire but they all share a thick main neutral wire
1
@nicolas073 why would a circuit breaker need to cut the neutral wire? that doesn't make any sense
1
2 phases can't normally rotate a motor
1
my rental apartment is 208v
1
the difference is so small that the devices will work on slightly different voltage (also most modern devices are 220-240v or 100-240v)
1
an elcb is obsolete because it only detects current in the earth wire unlike an rcd
1
@Gazer75 for some reason most uk homes are only 230v single phase even though it makes no sense
1
@bobingabout in mainland europe even some apartments get 3 phase because it allows for thinner wires (5g6mm² for 3x25a instead of 3g16mm² for 1x50a)
1
@bobingabout i'm specifically talking about the home consumer unit
1
do you mean c10 mcb?
1
it doesn't even make any sense because the nes is 9v & you can use a 100-240v ac adapter
1
only rated at 10a? where do you live? the schuko plug is rated at 16a
1
@Mcfreddo do you live in australia?
1
did you know? a standard b20 breaker is slower than a standard 20a american breaker
1
converting an ac voltage to another ac voltage is much easier than converting a dc voltage to another dc voltage
1
@tonchanthol5329 did you know? my range also uses a nema 10-50r instead of a nema 14-50r
1
here in america most main breakers are either double pole or triple pole unlike european main fuses
1
230/400v mcbs exist & you just have to disconnect live wires
1
are you sure about that? because high voltage dc is rare
1
i hate 120v because my room is 1800w instead of 2300w & my kitchen is 4800w instead of 7360w
1
@HelloKitty-x4u6d our 120v extension cords aren't safe because you can easily need 15a or even 20a of current
1
most countries use 220-240v because it's more efficient than 110-120v (for some reason japan uses 100v)
1
what about connecting the lamp's ground to the neutral? tn-c earthing system?
1
@mastergx1 old homes in finland use the tn-c earthing system where the washing machine circuit is 2x2.5mm² instead of 3x2.5mm²
