They glorified it in order to get their lebensraum, initially protected by the British Empire (after WW1), then turning against the British Empire and killing Brits.
There are always two sides to every story. One side is of EUROPEAN colonial powers, which seized the opportunity of a EUROPEAN war, to expand the own EUROPEAN empires (Britain/France) at the expense of another empire (Ottoman Empire). They set up people here against each other, in the typical way of the strategy of "divide and rule", and so the Levant was "divided" up by "rulings" made by outside powers (aka "imperialism"). Outside mass-immigration leading to mass-dissent, same as mass-immigration ALWAYS leads to mass-dissent, regardless of language, culture, country or ethnicity...
Then there is the other side of the story: The locals were given no voice on the own political future.
