I know, for 150 years the civil war has been a mystery. South goes out South goes in, never a miscommunication. You can't explain that.

It's always going to be a "debate" no matter how fringe the neoconfederate opinions are because the defenders of white supremacy have a vested interest in spreading that misinformation while many normal people don't have a vested interest in rebutting it. It's a bit like the constant need for "evolution debates" and "climate debates," it has nothing to do with facts or evidence and everything to do with a tiny fringe trying to force their opinion to have mainstream legitimacy.

That is the point of "states rights," we see the same thing today with "free speech."

No it didn't. The south seceded over Abraham Lincoln getting elected in the first place because he was against the growth of slavery. Earlier in the primary the South had split the Democratic party over the issue of slavery since many considered Steven A. Douglas (the pro-slavery guy from the earlier Lincoln-Douglas debates) too moderate for wanting to decide the fate of every new state admitted to the union on a case by case basis. The whole secessionist movement was a radical pro-slavery movement from the southern political elite.
