@JSM-bb80u The Us unlike France is a republic that always valued state representation. The state goverments are what can be shown as parallels to the national governments of european countries. And in the Us it seems like FPTP is still working better than in the UK or France in terms of voter representation.

@JSM-bb80u Yes the senate is not a democratically represented body. It's a state representative body. The founding fathers weren't "democratic", they were aristocrats/elitists. They didn't believe in mob rule aka democracy alone and they also understood the issues of aristocracy/monarchy. Hence they constructed a middle ground. The system was obviously subverted later on when everyone got the right to vote but that's another conversation.

@JSM-bb80u The Us was an alliance of states. At its conception it was less federal than the EU is right now. The electoral college was created to allow the states aka the countries inside the alliance, to have a decent representation in one of the 3 branches of the government, the senate was by its creation supposed to be a branch that is directly representative of the states, the congress was supposed to be the direct representative of the electorate (which was very minimal at the time, the vote was given to everyone later on). In contrast the system in France is closer to the congressional elections which the electoral college has nothing to do with.
