It doesn't have to be that your account is tied to your ID and more so that you verify with your ID and that's it. EU already does this for youtube btw.

@Herandro_just_Herandro It doesn't change a thing in terms of "your privacy against these companies". What it does do is keep the vast majority of minors off of content they shouldn't be watching.

ID verification.

@willfullyinformed Already in place for Youtube over 18 in EU.

@paladinsmith7050 You think a photo of your ID is "just another form of surveillance"? :face-blue-smiling: Buddy, they already know who you are and what your accounts are. In fact that device on your pocket is sending signals so they even know your location.

18+ rated games worked just fine during the age of gamestop. As for now, ID verification will do the trick.
1
Nah 16 you're old enough to know. It can be enforced via ID verification. It's already a thing in EU with youtube and in Korea and China as well.

Not the same at all. They can force social media companies (mainstream ones) to have ID verification. They did that to youtube in EU. The only loophole is VPN which I doubt underage kids have.

@nealstacy4393 If you actually believe that those companies don't already know who you are, where you live and even your live location then you are delusional .They know all your accounts and have tied it to your IRL identity. ID verification wouldn't change a thing. Now the question is, do you believe that employees have access to your information? The answer is no and if they have they can be easily sued to oblivion for it.

@phonsely And? Why do you think Mark Zuckerberg had a tape over his mic and camera? They already know who you are buddy. ID and face scans which will be probably not stored will change nothing.
1
You haven't had "privacy" since Bush. Sorry to break it to you.
1
@phonsely See how none of these include social media? Why? Because it's not part of it. Social media should only be limited by the 1st Amendment when it comes to voting age population because they can influence elections.
1
What privacy? Please tell me how today without ID verification for your account, you have more privacy than with ID verification? Oh wait you don't. Companies already have all your data buddy. ID verification doesn't change a thing. They also don't keep any information around ID verification.

@Herandro_just_Herandro So you disagree with alcohol having an age. If the parents want their 5 year old child to drink some vodka it's alright. You're against drugs being illegal or at least have an age restriction. So if the parents are potheads and the child gets their hands on some weed, let it smoke it right? Same with tobacco. How about driving a car? War? Working? Oh wait we have a fucking restriction age for all these things. We know social media are extremely damaging to children. So having an age restriction is 100% valid. You overestimate what minors in general can do. If social media had an ID verification tomorrow 98%+ of minors would never actually make an account prior to adulthood or 16+. Are there some minors that can be crafty? Sure. But if the minor manages to steal your card and buy a VPN to get on social media, then that is an exception and it will 100% be on the parents.

@phonsely Backlash and common sense. Social media doesn't apply to video games because the definition doesn't apply to video games.
1
You can have ID verification and have your account be anonymous. Only the companies have your info which spoiler alert, they already did have them.
1
@yewtewbstew547 Because they cannot legally use it or see it. It's stored. Although we know speculations of them selling users data to advertisers but that cannot be proven as easily as "Oh I am banned from social media? They used my personal info that are illegal to be used by them". You give them ID and face scan and it goes the same way that all your other data goes. In storage where no one can see them or deleted.

@saschap8461 The free ones are easily detectable and blocked. Go to China and try a "free VPN" and see how well it works.
1
@ForOne814 Tell me how a 14 year old with no bank account will manage to pay monthly subscription to a VPN service without their parents knowing.
