@Chuck26814 Well, if you want a gym or coffeeshop to be open right while a deadly disease is killing ~4K Americans per day, just go to your local business licensing board and apply for a license to kill no more than, say, 10 people per month. Easy peasy. Because that's what will happen if too many businesses are open. You're looking at this from the POV of a human. Try looking at it from the point-of-view of the virus. This has nothing to do with politics. For each normal pre-pandemic human activity, you can derive a "how easily could the virus spread from person to person" factor that's dependent on the following variables: - Is it indoors? - Are there people from different households there? - How good is the air circulation? - How close do people get to each other? - How long are random people in the close presence of each other? Supermarkets, and other large stores that can afford to upgrade their air circulation, are doing mostly OK in terms of not spreading the virus from customer to customer. The same unfortunately cannot be said for the workers in those places, or for stores where they can't afford to implement these measures. The authorities have had to make some hard decisions. Unless we're prepared to deliver food to everyone's homes (as China did during the worst of their lockdown back in Jan/Feb/Mar/Apr) we must keep those stores open. But everything else should probably stay closed. The alternative is going to look like 5000, then 8000 or more deaths per day.

Well, to be fair, the Republicans are all for states rights until suddenly they're not .. all for small government until suddenly they're not .. all for the free market until suddenly they're not. I've seen weathervanes in the shifty New England wind, atop an old barn, that are more steadfast than Republicans.

The government owns the USGPO (government printing office) just for that reason. If the government needed to print up ration booklets and war posters, that's who would handle the job.

@Chuck26814 Read what I wrote. Big stores have more capability to increase ventilation, make sure their workforce is appropriately masked, enforce distancing, etc than mom-and-pop stores. Is it unfair? I won't deny that. But the alternative is to let them spread disease among the local population, and that's just plain unacceptable in case you hadn't noticed.

@debbiedoodiedandi Ah, yes. They deride cancel culture, but then they're the first to throw their nice Keurig machines in the dumpster over Keurig pulling its ads from Hannity's propaganda show.

He looks painfully stupid. I suppose that comforts some people. /shudder/
