Given that America (like every other nation) is at war with this virus (which has been the third largest mass casualty event in our nation's history) it's astonishing that so many want to help it spread and potentially breed new variants - as if they think their choice to abstain from masks/distancing/vaccine affects only them. What's happening now in India is a picture of what happens when lots of people take that approach.

What's happening now is that their numbers were trending down during the winter, so that led foolish optimists to conclude that they had achieved herd immunity, so they reopened everything.

Cases were going up during the same time period in other places. @covidfatalityrateinunder7076 With that blithe "The virus has an overall infection fatality rate of 0.15%" you are as wrong as a person can be without speaking backwards while sitting in a bathtub full of snakes. The case fatality rate here in the US has gone down from 16% (at the beginning of the pandemic, when only sick people were tested) to around 2% now that we've been testing suspected cases for months.
