The superspreading event looks well underway already :( fresh video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44D55OUboxQ Looks like mask usage level there is less than 1%.

It's funny the way some people will seize on any opportunity to NOT wear a mask - even while the cumulative effect of not enough people wearing masks is what's causing the disease to continue spreading. Are you afraid of people laughing if you wear a mask when leaving the home? Are you afraid that wearing a mask outside of the home will mean you'll have to wash the masks more often? What's the expensive, painful, maybe just embarrassing-to-you downside of wearing a mask outside the home?

They're not even remotely clever. People like that fall into the Dunning-Kruger bin - folks too dim to realize the limits of their ability to understand things. Just avoid them. By the time they figure out it's real, they or someone in their family will have been hooked to a ventilator (or worse).

@mastercommander4535 The problem in those countries is that people bizarrely believe that being told to wear a mask (for public health measures) is some kind of an assault on their "freedumbs". Gosh, just wait until they hear they can't drive drunk on the wrong side of the road without a seatbelt on.
5
@davidpnewton No, you did NOT answer the question of what the cost is that's on par with the results of sickness and death. All you have hinted at is that it's a mere inconvenience to you.
4
@Ian Campbell What's this "fear" you speak of? I bought my masks and gloves and thermometer and o2 meter back in January after seeing the news out of China. So I just follow protocols and go about my business. No "fear" needed to follow protocols, any more than it's "fear" to use a seatbelt when driving a car.

@davidpnewton Sounds like you completely missed the point of what I asked. ONCE AGAIN - what is the "cost" to you (of wearing a mask outside the home) that is on par with the obvious damages caused by not enough people wearing masks?
3
@amiesparkle00 Most of them appear to be overweight boomers. Guess the user motorcycle market will be pretty good in 2 months, at least for people who like those oversized underpowered gas guzzlers.
3
@Ian Campbell Why bother? It's like a giant science experiment. Let 'em have their fun. In 40 days we'll know what happened.

Has anyone else noticed the precipitous decline in the rate of tests being performed in the USA? It's been trending down since July 29. https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/daily-tests-per-thousand-people-smoothed-7-day?tab=chart

@maxmuetze9083 My post didn't mention that topic.

In Trump's version of America (it's worse than a Tim Burton version) telling the truth is a punishable offense.
2
@davidpnewton All you've done is place your discomfort on the same level as illness and death for you and others. Not bright are you.

@isabellecavanagh6074 I tried interacting with some of those biker people on other threads. Guess they won't believe in covid until they're gasping for air and getting hooked to ventilators :(

@carolwilhelm1810 Unfortunately some people don't have the vocabulary of common good in their heads, and must be forced to do the right thing. During WW2, if the western democracies had relied only upon volunteer armies, we'd all be speaking German now.

@michellec8546 If people think it's inconvenient to wear a mask outside of the house, they should try being hooked to a ventilator then having scarred lungs for the rest of their lives. Sadly, people who think they're perfectly healthy (and who thus avoid wearing something that would keep them from sharing their droplets with others) are the ones driving the spread of this disease.
1
@davidpnewton Oh god. So much keyboarding, so little thinking. You are still trying to assign massive weight to the inconvenience of masking outdoors and assign massive discounts to the value of the lives of others. Not only can't you write concisely, you can't think concisely either. FFFS.
1
@davidpnewton Are you frigging kidding me? We're in the middle of a pandemic, you blithe fool, the extent of which is being exacerbated by people not wearing masks enough. Your actions make sense, but only if one assumes that your intent is to further spread covid. Are you by chance at Sturgis presently, whooping it up with all the other unmasked Bovine-Americans?
1
@davidpnewton And miss a chance to have fun with some fool who thinks he's the smartest person in his corner of a smallish trailer park? Your blithe ignorance of science, news, and pretty much anything makes you a chew toy for others. So - are you happy being an agent for inducing others to make the disease spread further and be in circulation longer? Because that will be the net effect among those dumb enough to listen to you.
1
@davidpnewton Is dawn coming to marble head finally? People who follow your advice, and wear masks less, are going to serve to further spread the virus. Perhaps you should make it clear in your comments that you are an enemy of America and/or an indirect employee of Putin.

@margaret lamb Here they are again. 165K deaths and climbing here in the USA. And our Black Knight brigade is chanting, "It's just a flesh wound."
1
@williamswenson5315 Trump's getting his wish. Show fewer new cases by testing less. It's going to work about as well as ending teen pregnancy by not testing for it :(
1
@thecook8964 The hospital bills alone (from the illnesses that will inevitably result) will drown any profits made off the event, but the costs will be transferred everywhere - American predatory capitalism strikes again.
1
Peter S If I don't want to argue their "right" to rebel against public health measures, could those people at least have the decency to remove themselves from the rest of us so they don't spread the virus? It would be greatly appreciated.
1
Peter S You care completely wrong. People who think they are healthy, and who thus avoid wearing droplet traps on their faces, are capable of spreading this disease widely. Otherwise it would only be circulating in senior care homes and nowhere else.
1
Peter S Yawn. We're up to 165K American deaths and the number keeps going up up up. What's been exposed is that when people fail to take this thing seriously, death follows.

Not sure you can reach those people. Too many of them follow the path of Louie Gohmert. Some people learn only through personal experience, without which the suffering and death of other people is meaningless to them.
1
@Banjo Shamen Seems like you're unfamiliar with the story of Louie Gohmert who, through his persistent denial of the reality of the virus, not only contracted it himself but likely spread it to others. Smart people can learn from the experiences of others, but the rest learn only from having it happen to them personally.

I use videos for it, since you can roll through them frame by frame and count mask-wearers and unmasked. Here's a video from the Sturgis motorcycle rally that started yesterday. Very few masks in sight. Without actually counting, it looks like under 1%. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44D55OUboxQ
