It was Thursday, October 9, 1941. Howard Smith covers this pretty thoroughly in "Last Train from Berlin", AA Knopf, published in 1942. I have a first edition copy. That day, the Nazi propagandists outdid themselves saying that every last gun, every last man, every last piece of war equipment was being put into the final blow that was supposed to destroy Soviet forces once and for all. After that, Dr. Deitrich was never the same, and everything just kept going downhill for the Nazis. See the chapter, "Dr Deitrich Goes to Town".
