  5. You can see some of Russia's rationales when you look at what the USSR used to be vs what Russia is now. Russia has perhaps 7% arable land, a negative birth-replacement rate, and many areas so unproductive (due to climate) that local economics don't even support paved roads. They are a third-world resource supply nation with delusions to grandeur. Sadly, they will never again be as effectively organized (and even then it was shitty) as they were under the Soviets, who at least kept people mostly employed and mostly housed.
