And they cannot do that because it's political suicide.

Somehow, they got behind the semi-rich guy who does to them precisely what they say they're all enraged over "elites" doing to them - moving jobs overseas, putting mom-and-pop shops out of business, and not paying his fair share of taxes. As the saying goes - the forest kept getting smaller, yet the trees kept voting for the axe, since they thought it was one of them because its handle was made of wood.
