@jmgirard7 Very sad. I know people who are well-educated engineers (science + technical backgrounds) who somehow have accepted the misshapen, delusional notion that out of nowhere all official data sources are lying to us, the general public, about matters as basic and consequential (and easily fact-checked) as the numbers of covid cases, illnesses, and deaths. They obviously trust the science education they received back before their minds got poisoned, but now - ? I was speaking with one such person last week after he said covid is far less dangerous than the flu, and so quickly got the numbers about how the closed-case death rate here in the US is around 2.2%, and that if we let it roll completely through the US population without let or hindrance we'd be looking at more than 7 million American deaths at that rate. He shot back, "How do you know that?" and I was taken aback. Wanted to explain that it's the same way I know we had large numbers of deaths and illnesses in the previous pandemic, or how hundreds of thousands of Americans died in the civil war, or how the Titanic sank, or how the Voyager I & II spacecraft took nice pictures on the way out of the neighborhood - by reading the results put together by people smarter and way more familiar with the stuff, and how those many different sources are all in substantial agreement on the basic facts.
We all need to get good at deprogramming, otherwise we are headed straight for the Weimar situation, only with the starting conditions so much worse in terms of the % nazis and their level of commitment to undo democracy to serve their tribalistic political ends.
