***** First of all, that's only about reliability. As I already said, a car isn't just about that. It's about engines, material quality, sophistication and probably other things as well. KIAs have made a massive leap in all areas but they're still not where the established brands are. In every single segment. You look at a Cee'd and a Golf and can tell there's a respectable gap between them.

epicfail86 Being competitive and being the best is two entirely different things. Each of us uses as reference what they know from the market they live in. The Genesis doesn't come to Europe. What does come to Europe is the i30 (among other models of course) and that competes with the Golf, the Astra, the Focus etc. While it's cheaper than those ones you can tell why. It's just not as refined. It's not at their level yet. The same with the KIA Cee'd. Now, I am giving them credit for what you say and I do respect them. You can tell from my first comment. What I don't agree with is that the usual suspects (Merc, BMW, Audi) should watch out because they really shouldn't. Not yet at least. Infiniti and Lexus cannot even get the sales the big German three do and they have very good cars. Especially Lexus. Hyundai/KIA has a very, very long way to go until they threaten Merc, BMW and Audi. That's all I'm saying.

Yeah nice car. I think it also comes with a 2.0 litre turbo. Or it used to I don't know.

They are but the last sentence is a bit too much. They haven't even caught up with VW, Opel etc yet.

Joao Pinto I've got an 8 year-old Opel with no issues at all. Reliability is a mixture of care and luck. That's not the point though. A car isn't only about reliability. It's about many things and Kia has a long way to go until they get all those things together.

epicfail86 So you're telling me Hyundai does a great job using average-quality materials in their interiors. And that's good why exactly? VW does a great job using great materials in their interiors. I understand their business plan but I don't like it. They want to end up competing with the Germans but I don't think they'll get there with their current approach. They offer average materials in lower prices and along with a long warranty they hope they'll take over the market. They have improved compared to the past but they're still not there. And which award-winning engines are you talking about? Compare the ones they offer for the c-segment with those of VAG, Opel, Ford etc.

***** Yeah good for them. If you feel happier inside a Hyundai/KIA compared to a VW/Opel/Ford good for you as well. I don't. I also don't expect Wards awards to tell me how I feel about a car. I can do it myself. Oh and by the way, the c-segment doesn't utilize V8s.

epicfail86 No but it affects how their cars are perceived. If you get the lower-tier models in your market that's the ones you use to base your judgement. Also, my sources are fine. The new Genesis isn't available in the UK yet for example. I think it's not even available in Germany. It will be. Big difference. The previous generation wasn't. Anyway, that's of little importance. You're using one of their top models as a reference for the whole brand and I think that's wrong. You're familiar with the Genesis saloon so you're using that example. I'm not familiar with it yet so I'm using the cars I'm familiar with. Regarding the Mercedes thing, I'm pretty sure someone asked them that question and that's why they replied. To be honest, the reply itself says it all. If I'm not mistaken the car won't even be available with a diesel which is a big thing especially for that segment and that market. When you're already at a high level it's much more difficult to make leaps. That's pretty logical. Hyundai started at a very low level so it's easier for them to advance. Of course things change but until that happens they're not a threat for the big guys. I haven't got anything against them so I'd be happy if they actually started making cars as good as the Golf for example. One more option for us buyers. A few years ago I wouldn't even consider buying a Seat but look at them now with the new Leon Cupra which is very, very good. If Hyundai/KIA manage something similar I'll be happy for them. In the meantime I'll be keeping an eye for the Genesis saloon being tested by Top Gear mag. Until then I have no opinion for that particular car.

epicfail86 No, I don't use a manufacturer's flagship as a reference. I use one of the cars that sell most. Regarding TG, I meant future reviews of the Genesis saloon. I have read reviews of the Pro Cee'd GT for example and although it's a good car, it's not as good as the competition.

Ben Garlick But you do get what you pay for. Although the Astra J isn't as nice inside as the H in terms of quality, it's still a lot better than the Cee'd. Overall it feels like a more expensive car.

Ben Garlick I'm talking about interior quality. The materials etc. The Astra's are better and mind you, Opel dropped the quality in the J compared to the H. The Asians are well know for their long warranties but the fact the rest don't follow the same path doesn't mean their cars are actually less reliable. I own an H GTC since 2006 and I've never had any problem of any kind.
