The UK, Aus, Can, US, EU and Ukraine are all complaining that Russia's referendums in the disputed territory are not fair. However, there was ample opportunity to hold referendums before the invasion to allow the people of those regions to decide.

@keithmorgan3295 Because, there is obviously serious dispute and civil war over whether territory should be part of Ukraine or part of Russia. The answer to your question is there is no indication a majority of people living in Tasmania want to become part of New Zealand. Had there been years of civil war in Tasmania between Australian backed Tasmanians and New Zealand backed Tasmanians - then I think it would be the most democratic way toward settlement.

Must be a lot of support when you consider the many millions that marched against the invasion of Iraq.

@harryhatter2962 There has been civil war in the disputed areas since 2014, and it is clear most people there have allegiance to Russia. In these areas Russian is the most used language, yet in 2017 the Ukraine government banned the Russian language in schools. In a democracy the people must decide what country they belong to.
