@Stantheman848 I think that's probably true in relation to middle class and above, but working class Victorians were lucky if they got a basic education. I was really talking about general information being accessible to ordinary people.

I was born in the south, but my parents were from the north. When I visited Gateshead in the 70s I went out for a walk on my own - next thing there was ten kids after me - I reckoned I was in for a hiding - they just wanted to know who I was and did I want to play football. Where I came from it was usually 'If I don't want someone to play - I'll take my ball in'..

There was less information about then. They were lucky if they got school until 12 and that was just basic '3Rs'. There was no radio, no TV, no internet and books were difficult to access. The only information was newspapers and most could either not read or could not afford to buy a newspaper. People did not know new things would not damage them - so they aired on the side of caution.

@apebass2215 The reason I used the word 'probably' is there is always provision in law to take account of unusual circumstances. The lady stated the road which she and her fellow cyclists were supposed to use was "up" and therefore not passable; this in effect meant there was no "road" as required by the law. It would have been preferable to push the cycles, but it might have been argued that, there were no pedestrians and the "no freewheel" fixed wheel drive made this impracticable over the distance as the rotating pedals would repeatedly strike the legs.

@jacquelineess1141 I see now. You are right the Victorians would have used 'err' but most people use 'air' now. These things get changed like 'on tenderhooks'... I find myself stuck in the middle.

@jacquelineess1141 It does get a bit confusing, because the word 'air' also relates to 'attitude'. This, and the words being homophonic in pronunciation is the reason it has become used. 'He reacted with an air of caution' works; whereas, 'she aired on the side of caution' strictly does not work. However, the word 'err' no longer features in common-use English, so 'aired' 'air' has erroneously taken its place. Probably should stick to the original - you had good reason to laugh - no apology needed.

That was back when those at the BBC probably thought it was working class word for 'pussy'... Where am I going with this?

They probably hadn't broken any law, but having no solicitor was an opportunity for the magistrates to fine them for being before the court.

That's an interesting way to call people dumb...

@jacquelineess1141 Good grammar - but nonsensical.

@billsmith5166 I assume, planning permission was required for a house, which could be objected to for certain reasons, but planning permission was not required for a tall wooden structure.
