  1. I don't think the Labour Party or Guardian quite get how many Labour voters they are alienating by opposing Brexit. Millions of Labour voters voted for Brexit and have had two years of well-off Labour politicians and journalists telling them they are second class citizens whose deeply held opinions should be ignored... These ordinary patriots are now seeing Eton educated toffs as brothers in arms.

  9. +TimmacTR Stands to reason! If we hadn't joined the EU we'd have no universities, our farmers would have gone bust years ago, there'd be no civil rights in the UK, our beaches would be knee deep in sewage and we wouldn't have been able to export or import a single thing since 1973...It must be down to rest of the the EU's influence on the UK, that so many want to leave the rest of the EU to come to live in the UK.

  10.  @zackgarrit5654  I think it's not possible to have that debate, because in the end it's no different than having a debate about whether blue is a nicer colour than red. There is plenty of evidence, but no real proof to silence either side. What is very wrong, is science stating things as being fact that are not proven. That science blatantly does this, is really more evidence in support of Creation and the Bible's account.

  13. LordHealey More people did vote in the referendum than in the last general election and there was reports of 80% turnouts on council estates. No one expects a 100% turnout, but there are a lot people fed up with having no left of centre option, that would vote for a Corbyn government.

  14. divvy1400yam600 We all know the fences were put up to stop people going on to the pitch, however, it was obvious that it might be necessary to go onto the pitch to escape dangerous overcrowding and that the fences would prevent this.

  15. I'm beginning to wonder what the Remainians have got to go on. I mean I just saw a advert showing the Albanian flag on Buckingham Palace with Chuka Umunna saying: 'the leave lot want to turn us into Albania'! I thought it must be a spoof - but turns out it's real. It's like the Remainians have paid the best advertising people to sell Christmas to Turkey.

  18. Jake Krige  No, I mean handing power to non UK citizens over UK citizens when there was no explicit consent by the UK electorate to do so. In Australia MPs have recently had to stand down as it was revealed they held dual nationality. Our MEPs are only 10% of the EU parliament. It's you who has the 'victim mentality' - have all those people that you think are not as clever as you think you are stopped you having your way?

  19. Err.. Because there's no such thing. We have had a 'referendum' in which the electorate voted on whether it wanted the UK to be part of EU. The answer was the UK electorate did not want to be part of the EU. The use of the term 'people's vote' is obviously intended to create an impression the people are opposed to the referendum result which is absurd, erroneous, and devious. Supporters of the EU have been opposed to the UK electorate having a say since 1973 - now they want a 'people's vote'.

  22. If the Tories are 'on the side of this country' why did they take the UK into the EEC/EU without a referendum and after promising not to and lie about loss of sovereignty? And why did they sell off billions of pounds of British assets that are now owned by wealthy foreigners? These are Tory policies that Jeremy Corbyn is on record as strongly opposing, yet somehow you believe he's against 'this country' not the greedy Tories.... Perhaps you're not getting balanced information?

  23.  @JonB1995  Tim's point was that people like Owen should accept that people on low wages can understand a question, are capable of voting and do not have to vote the way Owen wants them to. The attack was personal, as Owen was clearly saying Tim was a person that benefited from exploiting workers. In fact, Witherspoons pays standard industry rates - the main difference being ordinary folk can afford to eat at Withersoons... I wonder where Owen usually dines? If it is relevant to the substance of the argument (Brexit) it is only because the Witherspoon workforce has always and is currently operating within the EU.

  26. If it comes down to a general election between Boris and his Brexiteer cabinet and Corbyn with his second referendum - then a lot of Labour Leavers will vote for Brexit - and all Tory Remainers will vote to keep Corbyn out.

  30. Jake Krige  Those stats may be accurate, however, there's a reason we don't have to put our age, sex, profession, net worth, educational qualifications etc. on the ballot paper and this is because in a democracy each person has an equal say.

  31. Jake Krige  Not sure most of that makes sense. You see, we do not as you state: "vote for a government to lead us" as we only vote for constituency MPs. It is these MPs that really hold the power to form a government. These MPs have limitations to the power we allow them to exercise on our behalf. Handing power over the UK and its people to foreigners is not something the UK electorate has directly consented to and UK MPs/governments have acted ultra vires in doing this. It was parliament not David Cameron which decided to hand the decision as to whether the UK should leave the EU to the electorate and this was almost unanimous. There followed a referendum in which the result was the UK electorate wanted the UK to be out of the EU. Which brings us back to your one correct point - that it is "quite right" all votes are equal.

  36. The Political establishment (and it seems The Guardian) are pinning their hopes on a last minute surge toward the 'status quo' and are looking to the Scottish referendum for comfort. In Scotland though, the affect on 'status quo' was very clear cut. In this referendum there is no obvious loss of anything of any real significance to most people. Put it this way, turnout at 2014 EU election was 35% - compared to 66% at 2015 general election - so 31% were concerned enough to vote about Westminster, but not Brussels. Will this 31% see any reason to vote in the EU referendum? In this referendum general opinion may be far less important than willingness to vote. Even if Project Fear can bring about 60% in favour of staying in the EU, if only 50% of IN supporters actually vote, Leave could potentially win with a 75% turnout - which is similar to that achieved by those seeking 'independence' in Scotland.

  38. David Baird I'm not disagreeing with what you say. However, the term 'sovereignty' as used within the context of whether the UK should remain a member of the EU, is accepted as meaning the 'democratic self determination of a nation state'.

  41.  @tehrealfake  If you're talking about PR to select MPs then it's probable that, had this system been in place the UK would have had Brexit already. The present FPTP system deters voters from supporting Brexit parties, as a voter risks getting their worst outcome for nothing more than a protest vote. Had we had PR then a left Brexit party and a right Brexit party would be seen as a safe vote, because those MPs would side with the bigger parties. The bigger parties would see the threat and be forced to consider their EU policies. In the 2015 general election UKIP gained 12.6% of the national vote - under PR this would have elected 81 MPs - UKIP did not get a single MP. This was just a right Brexit party with a wasted vote factor. So just think if there was also a left Brexit party with no wasted vote factor.

  42. If you do some balanced research you will see that the pandemic and war on the Ukraine/Russia border has caused the same problems to EU countries. There is plenty of evidence to show the UK is as well if not better.
