Comments by "Iazzaboyce" (@Iazzaboyce) on "Why are 'right-wing' newspapers going after Angela Rayner? | LBC analysis" video.
The issue is people have to pay tax on profit - it's how Angela Rayner gets paid and how Angela Rayner is able to make spending pledges in the Labour manifesto...
1
Are you saying if she had owed more she would have paid it?
1
There is no law stopping you living in any number of houses, but if you sell a house you have not been living in any profit is subject to capital gains tax. Students typically rent accommodation which doesn't involve making any taxable profit. However, if the owner of student accomodation sold the property then the owner would have to pay tax on any profit gained from the sale.

Does look like she made a false declaration to evade paying tax though...

@csharpe5787 Says a lot of people and journalists are allowed to challenge Bojo's tax affairs...

Are you saying if Angela had made more profit she would have declared it to HMRC?

@beaudog639 And saying she's against selling council homes, because they're needed and not replaced - then buying one at discount - selling it because she's got another home - and dodging paying tax on the £50K profits - is not hypocrisy?
1
@beaudog639 Thing is - you say 'a billionaire who's avoided £20m of tax' but avoiding tax is not illegal. Making a false declaration about your primary residence so as not to pay tax - is evasion which is illegal. Yes, she could have made an innocent mistake - but the opportunity to apologise and pay the money has gone.

@beaudog639 When you sell a property in the UK you must pay tax on any profit unless you declare the property was your home for which there is tax relief. No one is pretending AR did not make such a declaration on the sale of the house. There appears to be substantial evidence AR was actually living at a different property with her husband and children and was letting the sold house to her brother. I don't think you have to be very clever to understand the forms. The argument it is somehow more moral to steal a small amount of money, because others are stealing more money, rests on the assumption that, given the opportunity to steal more money, some thieves will steal less money. AR's problem is she is in public office making taxation laws, spending tax money and being paid by the taxpayers.
1
@beaudog639 The only people pretending are AR pretending she lived in a house when evidence shows she was living in a different house and those pretending they would not be complaining had a Tory MP done the exact same thing. Making a knowingly false declaration to evade paying tax is a criminal offence and this doesn't change, because some people like the Labour Party.

@beaudog639 Where have I said I think it's OK for Tories to not pay tax? You are saying I think this, not me. Tax avoidance is legal, because it is based on how the law applies to a person's actual circumstances. Tax evasion is not legal and occurs when a person has given false information, where the person would have owed tax had they given true information. I have said AR could have said this was a mistake and paid the money, but she decided to insist she gave true information about her past home address, so, it's too late now to claim she made a mistake. The reason I don't believe she was living at the house is neighbours are saying she lived with her husband at a different house and her brother lived at the house. I don't see any reason to think this is not the truth.

She says she's against selling council homes, because they're needed and not replaced - then buys one at discount - sells it because she's got another home - and dodges paying tax on the £50K profits...

@ignoranceisbliss6259 Being 'charged with a crime' doesn't mean a person has broken the law. We do still have a justice system in which a person can plead not guilty. It worries me the way some Labour supporters think...

@ignoranceisbliss6259 I am concerned any MP has lied to evade paying tax. The amount is immaterial - if it wasn't much, why didn't she tell the truth and pay it? Are you suggesting had it been double, she would have told the truth and paid it - or at what amount would you say she would have told the truth and paid it? What is your source for the police not investigating and as you say AR being "cleared"? Last I heard the police were reviewing a decision not to take the matter further. Your remarks about a male MP's private parts are not relevant to the discussion about whether or not AR committed tax evasion.
1
@ignoranceisbliss6259 Well you obviously don't 'see', because I am saying the alleged amount evaded by Rayner is very relevant indeed. The Zahawi case is entirely different. As I understand, he sold a company and HMRC contacted the professionals dealing with the CGT and identified one or more mistake. HMRC then imposed a penalty to ensure the correct CGT was paid and Zahawi was more careful in future and this was immediately paid in full. This is hardly a 'news story', because wealthy people are always in 'talks' with HMRC over their tax submissions/liabilities. It's quite normal and lawful to employ accountants to pay as little tax as possible. So, there has been no suggestion of any crime or wrongdoing by Zahawi. He is not as you have stated: "like zahawi, who is actually provably guilty of dodging about 10,000% more..." The big difference is the main allegation against Rayner is that, she knowingly declared false information with the clear purpose of not having to pay CTG. This in itself is a serious offence.
1
@ignoranceisbliss6259 There's no evidence of Zahawi having committed any crime or having dodged paying any tax. It appears he hired professionals to keep his tax bill as low as possible and HMRC then disagreed with these professionals, imposed a penalty (probably to pay for HMRC costs) and helped the professionals identify the correct CGT liability. Clearly, it was a valuable company with complex issues surrounding owner tax liabilities. If you research a left-wing newspaper you should get the same story. It must be fun living in a world where you believe your own delusional fantasies. I'm concerned you actually believe people who vote Conservative cannot think for themselves. Why would anyone believe this?
1
@ignoranceisbliss6259 I actually said, Zahawi employed professionals to minimise his tax bill; was found to have done something wrong, for which he agreed to pay a penalty and pay the correct tax. That was the end of the matter and no further action was taken, so Zahawi is innocent of any criminal offence. Your claim, he was "fined over £3 million" is incorrect.. I actually said, Rayner is in a different position, (given she was living with her husband at a property which constituted the couple's primary residence), because she is refusing to accept responsibility for declared information being wrong and refusing to pay the CGT. So, at this point it amounts to wilful evasion of lawful taxation. I also said, the police were reviewing a decision not to take the matter further. So your 'summary' is really your 'strawman'.
1
@ignoranceisbliss6259 He wasn't given a 'fine' he was offered to pay a 'penalty' and to pay the correct tax. In the grown-up world we have different words for different things.
1
@ignoranceisbliss6259 Anything to say about today's decision by Police to investigate Angela over false declaration of main residence?
1
@ignoranceisbliss6259 "take no further action" doesn't mean 'done nothing wrong'....
1
I thought Nicola bought herself a campervan with SNP funds - 'embezzlement' is entirely different to 'tax evasion'.
1
@craigevans6156 OK! And I am not saying anyone is guilty - just repeating the allegations as they have been reported.

I think David Lammey MP summed it up nicely: 'Angela was allowed two principle homes for tax liability relief and everyone else is allowed one principle home for tax liability relief'...
