There were/are at least 7 million (10% population never mind workforce) EU nationals in the UK making jobs harder to get and lower paid, housing harder to get and more expensive, queues longer for public services and consumer goods. In contrast - perhaps 1.5 million UK nationals in EU mostly retired spending their UK pensions employing EU people. If a million retired Brits are spending on average £300 per week in the EU - that is 15.6 billion UK pounds being pumped into the EU economy each year. 'Great deal'...

@steveosborne2297 Yes, however, I expect EU immigration policy and FOM played a significant role in developing UK non-EU immigration policy. But, as you say ultimately it was the UK that was sending her home - just as it is the EU preventing UK citizens living and working in the EU - not Leave voters or the UK government.

My wife and I was at Heathrow in departures once and we spotted a young woman (early 20s) crying her eyes out. We asked if she wanted some company had a few drinks together. The reason was she'd been working in London for 2 years set up home made loads of friends and was forced to go back to New Zealand because her visa expired. Her grandparents had moved from England to New Zealand in the 1950s. I told her she should have got herself born in Romania and we were going to vote to leave the EU and wanted our cousins down under to be allowed to stay in the UK.
