Whatever some people are answering to some polling questions during a cost of living crisis; a referendum of 35 million voters on joining the EU against a stable UK economic background and after an extensive and exhaustive campaign, is going to be a very different kettle of fish. There could be 20% keen on EU membership, but there will be 20% equally determined on UK independence and this leaves 60% who are really not that bothered. The 'join' side (asking for change) would have to persuade 11 million of these voters to give up political independence, give up the pound, pay the EU fees, accept freedom of movement, hold even more elections for even more politicians and appear to the world like a nation that cannot make it in the world. I fail to see what the 'join' side could possibly offer these people passed a 1970s Coca Cola advert and a pie in the sky promise of a better economy...
