@ShahidKhan-ke8fe There was only three TV channels and no possibility of re-watching a programme. If the broadcaster wanted less people to hear a particular political message the programme could be aired at the same time as a popular show on another channel. I think people in the 70s were sufficiently educated to understand sovereignty, however in 1975 the threat to UK sovereignty was not palpable. It was difficult to persuade people the UK would be governed by other countries in thirty years time. Really, the whole thing was presented as being 'just about trade'.

You hit the nail on the head there - when you said you are too young to remember.

@ShahidKhan-ke8fe Firstly, the referendum was in 1975 not 1973. Secondly, the emphasis was placed on 'trade' to the extent that 'common market' was put on the ballot paper. Thirdly, it was not at all clear that membership would involve a loss of UK sovereignty as there were no elections for MEPs until 1979 - no single currency until 1999.

@ShahidKhan-ke8fe But, this video show a debate before the 1975 referendum. You were saying that people were not educated to understand. When the UK was joined to the EU in 1972/73 there was no referendum and no chance for the people to oppose whether they understood about loss of sovereignty or not.

@ShahidKhan-ke8fe That's not a response. That looks like you pretending you are too clever to argue. I simply asked why you believed two ten year old foreign cases in a foreign court were relevant to the UK joining the EEC. The UK was joined to the EEC by a UK government that had indicated in it election manifesto it would not join the UK to the EEC. So, the UK people had had no real say in the matter. There was debate in the UK parliament, but the 'pro-marketeers' as they described themselves had a narrow majority.

@ShahidKhan-ke8fe Why do you think that is relevant to the UK joining the EEC?

She stayed 'calm' during the second world war - so calm she didn't do a thing to help the war effort.

I immediately thought '2026' he's an egotist - he chose that year because he was born in 1926. I checked Wikipedia and sure enough, he was born in 1926 (same year as my Dad). I've never trusted the word of people who see the world orbiting themselves.

It was brought in to prevent disease in underprivileged children Thatcher was lucky as her dad owned two grocery stores but a lot of children were undernourished.

Or in the case of the present cabinet, mummy and daddy

Will anyone else be suffering from the ‘selfish attitudes of the past’ or will it just be you, your kids and your grandchildren.

I don't think anyone ever said the world was going to end. It was just a way of making sure children got some calcium. You survived because you were lucky to have parents that could/would give you what you needed. Lucky you...

He had the wrong idea about the UK in the EEC - turned out to be a massive waste of time and money...

I think you are the one that should explain, as you made the unfounded assumption in your original comment. If I claimed that Britain would be better off today had the Conservative government not took the UK into the EU in 1973 and had people like Thatcher not campaigned to stay in during the 1975 referendum. Then you would expect me to give an explanation as to why. Would you not?

I think people understood those issues at the time. What people found difficult were unknowns like 'a leap in the dark'.
