Yeah, but the Tories made mistakes too like going into the European Union when Labour were against it and wanted to stick with the Commonwealth. My son lives on Currumbin Creek about an hour South of Brisbane - but he works in Broken Hill flying to and fro. His mum and me visited last August and had a great time.

She was 18 in 1943 - the D Day invasion of Europe did not take place until the following year (1944) - you need to learn some history - they hide it in books ;o)

@jacktattis Think I was talking about Margaret Thatcher - how in WW2 she didn't join the Armed Forces or the Land Army when others did...
1
@jacktattis She was at university.. maybe if everyone had gone to university we could have defeated the Nazies by Trivial Pursuit...
1
@jacktattis I'm not complaining - just stating facts. Hundreds of thousands of young women joined the Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Navy to 'do their bit'...
1
@jacktattis Like I said, it's not about what I think, just what happened. There was nothing preventing her joining the Armed Forces or Land Army. She was not in the 'Volunteer Fire Brigade'. People with commercial property were ordered by law to firewatch their property at night. Her father owned a shop.
1
@jacktattis Then she sold off the nation's assets which are now 90% owned by foreigners - and got us into 'Europe' which turned out to be the biggest political mistake in UK history - some 'Brit' she was...

I have explained this already, but I'll do so again: From 1941 all women over 18 were interviewed and required to choose from selected war service jobs such as, Land Army, Air Raid Warden, and Munitions Worker or one of the Armed Services. By 1943 90% of single women and 80% of married women were employed doing work essential to the war effort. This is historical fact and you can't change it just because it doesn't your deluded opinion of Thatcher - that is built on myth.

I'm British from a military family. Both my grandfathers were Army and served in WW1 India, Iraq, WW2 with combined service of 50+ years as one was orphaned into the Army age 11 and left after 30+years rank captain. My father was Fleet Air Arm (22 years) and served in WW2. All three were staunch Labour supporters.

Who said anything about the 'front line'? Are you trying to shift my remarks to something different that you might have an answer for? She could have enlisted in any of the armed forces in 1943 if she chose to - she chose not to.....In fact she chose to do nothing to help the war effort.....She turned her back on her country in its hour of need.

Thanks, as I said I was there in August and the Sun was scorching hot. And I'm informed that's winter in Aus!! I've told him to protect himself and I'll bang it home again. I was surprised just how pale the locals were they obviously give this awful thing the care it needs. I imagine it was a tough lesson though ;o(

She evaded war service when patriotic men and women were dying for the country - accept it.

Did you look-up the difference between 'conscription' and 'enlist' yet?
1
Yes that’s right! She chose to attend university instead of making a contribution to the war effort.

I think we give too much say to political parties of both kinds - if they had to work together we would only get change when there was a common agreement. He's into surfing at the moment, but I think he did show an interest in golf in the UK, so I'll mention it. It's past midnight here so if I don't reply soon - it'll be because I've shut down.
1
Are you suggesting that if I did not do the things you mention then I would be just as cowardly and unpatriotic as Margaret Thatcher was during her country's hour of need?
1
A bit silly if we start comparing medals - don't you think?
1
12:00 "Yes they're women" - meanwhile across the pond in Blighty 18 year old Margaret Roberts is diddling her fanny dreaming of the German invasion.

Do you always get like this when you lose an argument?

Unfortunately it’s too late to ask my father about Capt Brown, but I think it’s likely they would have crossed paths, as my father served on most of the carriers and main air stations. His job was as air craft electrician, so he did engage with pilots and I do remember him mentioning test pilots. After the war Labour won a huge victory with support from overseas forces and introduced popular policies like the National Health System. BTW my son lives in Australia I was there last year - nice.
