This is a war. A war on an evil that is as evil as or worse than the Nazis in WWII, and they have support around the would from raving lunatics like Briahna Joy Gray who is taking every moment she can to push the Hamas narrative as if they are normalized, regular human beings. I don't think it matters a bit how many civilians are killed in this war. It is a massive tragedy and the destruction of potential humanity is horrible - but there is no other way to carry out what absolutely must be done without these kinds of casualties - whatever they are. Period!
Second point is that if you look at the Palestinian society, it is a low tech terrorizing of its own people since birth, and has them believing that if they die violently in jihad they get a fast-pass to paradise, and these people actually believe it, and their leaders are proud of this work. This adds to the confusion. How human is a person born and raised in a society like that. Listen to the Son of Hamas, Mosab Hassan Yousef and how he talks about this. This is a society programmed by very smart evil men who profit immensely from what they are doing, and openly say they want this for the whole world.
That makes at least in part every Palestinian who puts up with this, or cannot get out of it a willing soldier or a terrorised hostage or just an worker slave with nothing good in their live. How human is a person who yearn for death because their lives are so bad, because their leaders take the money meant for them and make their lives miserable.
What war against Hamas must be carried out no matter what the cost in lives - as long as the taking of the vast majority of these lives is not done brutally or callously or with joy, as was done by Hamas against Israel on Oct 7th. The reason for this is that when this is set right an infinite number of future Arabs/Palestinians will be free of Hamas and this horrorific society.

When Sam Harris states that Israel has the most power, and if they wanted to they could kill everyone in Gaza, which is more or less true.
And it is also true because we see it all over the world that Muslims, if they had the most power, would kill most or all of the Jews exactly as Hamas did on 10-7.
The Muslims seem to me to spin this is way that says that they only reason Israel does not kill them is the moral outrage they would generate, or the names they would be called and take advantage or that by taunting them with their own Western values.
By what Hamas did, and Muslims all over the world approved of in that circumstance they seem to be all about barbarism, and flaunting it in the face of the West which has had its own barbarism that is fading into the past for the most part. Hamas and ISIS are a big middle finger to the idea of civilization at the same time counting on it to save them and allow them to take over.
This just cannot be allowed to happen. The West cannot be so insecure and doubtful of its own existence that if falls for this kind of infantile absurdity.
If the world is just raw power used to any ends, then they West has as much right to genocide as Islam does, and it is currently strong enough to back it up, yet the West seeks something better. The something better part is where Islam fails, it only offers people to be part of an end-times victory - in death by making the vast majority of their lives miserable and meaningless. Which is why Islam keeps the majority of their people in ignorance and poverty and rides herd over them like a sheepdogs.
The West feels it can wait patiently for Islam to reform itself, but Islam is far more structurally stable than the somewhat-democratic West.
The West has to be able to see and react decisively to existential threats, in this case it means taking this fight to the wall - to the end, as it did with Japan and Germany where now all are happier and more productive and free.

Weinstein is all over the place. He does have a point but he is not really saying much different than Harris.
The Islamic poor culture is apartheid vertically, it's a class warfare where the average people are born into
and brainwashed into a low tech totalitarian system that generates slaves, soldiers and shields.
I don't think we in the West can understand what it is like to live in a system where church and state are the same, and especially into this system that has evolved it to evil perfection. It's evil to everyone outside it,( and inside it too ) because it is an expansionist militant system that happens to be weak compared to the rest of the world. That's OK, they plan, they sell us oil, they learn in our universities, they buy our weapons, learn our technology and the West is just drunk with laziness and idiocy and we underestimate them, but these folks are very intelligent peolpe, they are not the pawns, the drones of their society, they are brilliant with technology.
Then finally, I think another aspect of this is the domination of women. We in the West have gone a bit nuts in terms of equality of women and gay rights and not all this transgenderism, and it threatens Islam because they have a hierarchical society where women are dominated and owned by men. Threaten mens sex lives and you have a real problem.

You're vastly over-reaching.
I've been a liberal-progressive ... and would up until 10-7 have said "Left", but on every issue except Israel-Palestine.
It has enraged me for decades going back well before the turn of he century that "Leftists", I'll call them Leftists,
have been associating and show-horning in the issue of the Palestinian terrorists as some kind of liberal-progressive
issue, when it is not, and is in fact the exact opposite. Palestinians are totalitarian fascist militant terrorists.
That doesn't make me a conservative, or make Thomas Sowell right about anything. Here is how I would explain
the problem ...
The bottom line is that the whole world exists in barbarism and has always been at war in various ways to varying degrees, and very few can live free of that, and some are absolute slaves and live unhuman lives. So, the most efficient way to be at war is the hierarchical brainwashed society with liberty and freedom only available to those at the top of the economic or political hierarchy. Islamists have recognized this for a long time while Westerners are trying to deny it. Run this out in time and unless we recognize that we need to be cold and barbaric at some point we, the West, is going to lose, and lose badly because we have treated the whole world so badly that we are the object of hatred that really should be distributed to those who refuse to allow the world to progress from barbarism.
So, to connect with Sowell, what he is saying, or claiming is that human nature cannot be perfected so we must live in there hiearchical barbarian societies and not expect anything - he is the shill for plutocracy.
I'd say there is a sharp difference so sharp that the moment your step towards anything Sowell says you slide right into plutocratic fascism, and what the West has morphed into is a fascist system that brainswashes people to think they live in fantasyland so that they will not rebel and will serve the "empire" well as duped fools always deluded in the thought that they can change the system or the system will change in their lifetime, when by design, the Orwell 1984 design, it will not.

I've watched and listened to Democracy Now! in the US for decades, in fact I live in Amy Goodman's hometown and have heard her speak a few times. Democracy Now! is such a good source for news from a Left perspective on almost any issue BUT the Middle East.
I've never heard Democracy Now! run a positive story on Israel ever. Not one, not ever. Every time Israel is reported on it is as if they are reporting on Nazi Germany. DN! never reports the history of the region. When there are Palestinian deaths they report the victims and show some video - but they will not report on what sparked off the situation. They never talk about the murders and attacks against Jews from Palestinians who are only employed because they work in Israel.
Conversely, I've also never heard a negative story about the Palestinians. Including October 7th. No matter what they always report the Palestinians as victims, and Israel as the imperialist, facist, genocidal, apartheid .... blah, blah, blah.
I don't see how a channel that be so objective on so many issues and report so deeply can be so black and white partisan and against Israel.
After Oct 7th I just cut Democracy Now! out of my favorite channels because they were so bad.
But then we wonder why the young people are so clueless about this history and situation. Astoundingly so.
This from me who am not Jewish, Christian, Muslim, or any religion. I am an agnostic who believes only in the golden rule. My reading of Islam is that from the time of Mohammed, the conquering general, all non-Muslims and their lands are fair game for attack. Look at the Arab world all the way to Iraq and then into Iran and see how they live and how their societies are. Look at what happens to people who exercise their right to free speech, like Salman Rushdie.
Listen to the Imams and Ayatollahs and what they say. The MEMRI channel on YouTube has endless interesting stuff.
They talk about everyone living in peace - but that happens only in Israel, and all the Muslims attack with everything they have, as well as stockpile and moving into place for their next Oct 7th style massacre.
It is a global tragedy. Personally I believe the fault is with Islam, but also that Islam is to violent, closed and totalitarian that it cannot be cracked open and fixed like the West did with Germany and Japan after WWII. It means this hate and violence will continue from their side virtually forever.

I think Pakman is way, way wrong about immigration, where his basic argument seems to be that if we open the immigration flood-gates it would not be that much of a problem because most people don't want to come to the US.
Even if that true, which it does not seem to be because the numbers are in the tens of millions, there is the question of the actual character of the people coming here, and what they and their descendents do over time.
For example Muslims have a history that we are being shielded from of coming to a new place, building up numbers, not melting into the socieity, and in fact trying to change it as we see now in the UK.
I disagree with Pakman on that discussion ... around 47:00
His argument is absurd when he says that if you look at an average country, maybe ONLY 10% of those people would want to come to the US ... which is essentially saying 10% of the rest of the world ... my jaw just hit the ground. If the population of the world is being conservative 8 billion, 10% of that would be 800 millions people, or almost three times the population in the US today ... almost. That is insane. I wonder what he would say about that now ... I did not realize this was two years ago.
