It is unfair to imply this is more advanced than the cathedrals of France. Most of the Buddhist, or whatever they are temples are solid, they are not the graceful amazing arches of the European cathedrals. Not that I am trying to ignore them, they are amazing in their own way and really just should not be compared between cultures. I hope that I can visit this place sometime in my life, it is amazing. Also, I suspect that like most of man's achievements they pushed it too far and it did not scale and there was either a lack of logistical technology to support it or an environmental collapse. We never learned a damn thing because now we are doing the same thing to the entire Earth.

According to Wikipedia: Originally constructed as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu for the Khmer Empire, it was gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century as such it is also described as a "Hindu-Buddhist" temple. It was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yaśodharapura (Khmer: យសោធរបុរៈ, present-day Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, as his state temple and eventual mausoleum. Breaking from the Shaiva tradition of previous kings, Angkor Wat was instead dedicated to Vishnu.
