My preconceived notion would be that prison is a place, assuming the person is separated from society, that whatever criminal action or tendency the prisoners have would be channeled to the rest of society for some productive purpose ... a kind of enforced slavery. It would be immoral to not have bounds and controls over that slavery, it should be dispassionate and decided on as agreeably as possible. If a prisoner does not want to work, that's fine, he or she should be entitled to a safe humane place to live out their sentence, but nothing extraordinary in terms of medical care ... that is a "gamble", a rational decision each prisoner should make. Society should gain something is consensual with the prisoner, but the bottom line is that the prisoner has lost their rights to relate in trust with society and presumably owes society some compensation for whatever they did. The flip side is that society should work constantly and furiously at making justice as good as possible. There needs to be some acknowledgement of "degrees" of guilt. Some evidence, convictions or stories that condemn people may be more credible than others - justice has to remember it is fallible too.
