You merely have to have enough energy to overcome friction and wind-resistance to accelerate. It is the same thing as a manual transmission. You should be able to see that intuitively.

@ezicarus8216 > tacking sail boats are also PUSHED by the MOVING water under it Shirley, you jest.

I don't know about the thought experiment, but the animation was cool.

You could do the same thing with the right gear ratio.

I doubt it because the aerodynamics of a windmill are different than hydrodynamics ... but maybe on a much larger scale it could work.

@victorfinberg8595 We really need the data on under what conditions the thing moves. We see it moving a little ... but it is unclear what is really happening or happened to get to that point.

@victorfinberg8595 autorotation is probably a good analogy.

This is not what I thought it was. So, the wind initially starts the craft moving forward, and the motion of the craft turns the wheels to rotate the fan so that it blows backwards creating thrust? So as long as the wind and the thrust add together to overcome drag and friction the craft keeps going, and past a certain configuration will accelerate? This is really good ... great video!

Is it possible to take energy from the wind and use to power a car ... of course, if there is actually wind and you don't expect too much speed from the car. If there is no wind ... no energy, no movement - unless you have battery storage. You could do the same thing with a high enough gear ratio and a flywheel ... so what?
