For the average person online cloud storage is the best way not to lose anything. Back it up maybe redundantly to two cloud services is probably the best thing to do. Buying and managing one's own hardware and software usually doesn't work for average people because they do not want to learn what they need to know, and will eventually make a mistake when someone else sets it up and tells them what to do. As to paper? Have you ever tried to read text off a thermal or dot matrix printer from the 80's? ;-)
