Another great John Evan keyboard performance was the By Kind Permission of on the Living In The Past double ablum set. I really miss that incarnation of Jethro Tull, today is such a shallow reproduction.

  20. HEY RICK, I love your channel, though it often goes over my head technically like this with the music theory, but ... Can you do a "What Makes This Song Great" on the 1971 Jethro Tull song "My God" from the Aqualung album? 1. There is a brilliant acoustic guitar intro by Ian Anderson. 2. There is a groundbreaking and raucous and as far as I know unique guitar solo by Martin Barre at about the 3:00 mark and then another near the end of the song. 3. And that leads into the use of Plainsong/Gregorian Chant ... in a fucking Rock Song ? 4. The bass is powerful and strong ... hope I am not sounding like Donald Trump on that. 5. The vocal phrasing of the lyrics is really moving. That is an amazing piece of music, not to mention the Progressive aspect of it, and that it has an actual point/message. Hard to find a better or more meaningful song to give a close look at historically, eh? ;-) ( I think I am going to have to watch this video about 10 times so I can begin to understand harmony - not the same as counterpoint, right? )

If you like Zappa's music, fine. I don't imply all kinds of things about you and try to vilify you. The problem with our society is everywhere at all levels. It is not the writer, it is the audience he was given the impression is listening to him, or his invalid moods or life experience, yes - the editor, and even the people who read it. It's not the end of the world. Maybe at some point people will stop being so dramatic, sarcastic, and learn to figure out what they really have to say and how to express it without having bothering people be their main goal. Personally, I don't particularly like the mix of bothersome lyrics mixed in with even the most brilliant music. It might seem cool the first few things you hear it, but it gets annoying. The way we are going there is not going to be anything remembered in 200 years anyway. Maybe that is good because if the songs of today are not forgotten the ancestors and copyright holders will still be suing people like Rick for even mentioning their great-great-great-great-great--great grandparents IP.

Rick ... if you even see this, you talk about how bands are disappearing here, but you are ignoring a super-group that has released 3 excellent new albums in the space of almost as many years, Jethro Tull. In 2025, as of March 7th they released "Curious Ruminant" which I would think someone with your grasp of music and sound engineering would appreciate. Then back three years was "RökFlöte" and "Zealot Gene". And then before that going on 70 years of great music from Ian Anderson and his band Jethro Tull. What is the problem with mentioning a JT song now and then, or highlighting an album that after 55 years has released 24 best-selling studio albums, and some solo albums? Not to mention former lead guitarist Martin Barre who is one of the best guitarists in the industry ... look up "Trio Instrumental" live improvisation, and all his lead parts in JT. Where is the love for a great rock band, Jethro Tull?

  54. the browser mode on iTunes is pretty good ... but is it easy to lose and hard to find again ... iTunes has always sucked. Before I had Apple stuff I had some other cool audio-video box that let you listen to the radio too. AND record from the radio. So if tyou were somewhere listening to something and did not know what it as, you could record it to the internal disk. Also ... it did not try to tell you what to put and not put on your device ... I wish I could think of what the company was ... and I wish they were still around.

This is how business works, they never want to give out the power or information to allow people to do anything that is not able to be stolen or exploited by a larger company. I had some similar experiences in college. That is why it is so political these days to do anything. If you know what the good teachers are you can take their classes and get out of an institution and go to work and join whatever field. If not you muck about burning up money giving it to the school - whose job is to winnow out students ... they want the political ones, the easy to control ones, the legacies, etc. Our system of capitalism which is a great thing has sunk into complete corruption, and that corruption has taken over the government, and most of the media.

  63. vocals these days seem trite and almost annoying ... or maybe it is just that vocals, outside of just regular popular much have always been kind of pointless. For musicians to write great music, and then to include great lyrics is like two big hurdles to surmount, and usually the lyrics drag down the music. I always think of Deep Purple's, Smoke On The Water, which at the time struck me as such a powerful cord progression, that the lyrics just made it bubble gum. Same with something like Money For Nothing .... What is wrong with instrumental music? I like instrumental jazz and rock a lot.

They go through all the trouble you point out to work into that cool jam, and then all of a sudden they break into some kind of punchy arrhythmic section that pulls me out of the theme of what I am thinking the song is about. I am hearing this song for the first time, so I am probably missing something and would get used to it and maybe even like it if I listened to it a lot ... so many of the songs you have covered do something like this, but they keep the theme going, but do it more gracefully ...   88. I agree with Les Hall at 8:43 ... a lotta 1 - 5 stuff going on, with major embellishment, because the tune is so slow you can pack it full of all that stuff - but it was done tastefully. "Angie" was lots more popular than my favorite song off the album, "100 Years Ago" which really gave me a weird feeling because around that time I was a kid at camp and out hiking with the campers and counselors in the Santa Cruz hills and it seemed like it was timeless and could have been 100 years ago.

I never noticed it or thought about it ... this not being one of my favorite songs - but it is a kick-ass tune, and now that you mention it, I see "what makes this song great". That is, the ascension as you say of the chord progression ... as in struggling ... a fight ... a long slog .... and the resolution of the chorus is delayed because the whole point of the song is, no matter how long it takes - don't stop believing. It is actually really brilliant, and I'm glad I watched this video, among others. It's interesting to see the thought that goes into some of these tunes, they are truly works of art with a lot of crafting ... even if it is only rock and roll!

Rush with the high vocals and what seemed pompous kind of lyrics put me off, but I always had a respect for the things you are pointing out here ... even if I could not explain them. Great job deconstructing the songs and it is so cool to hear the different parts of the song. How do you get those drum, vocal, guitar, etc parts separate from the whole song. I have to strain like crazy to hear these kinds of things in music because I am not a trained musician.

  125. Bhy the way this was all happening when Steve Jobs was there. Steve was not so brilliant as everyone like to think. The main funny thing is that any company tends to have middle manage chaos and Steve Jobs was a dictator, and even a half-assed dictator could still beat out a bunch of managers bickering with each other and trying to block anything that anyone else wants from them, and ignore suggestions from customers. it is the same thing on Apple communities ... if you do not kiss the asses of the "geniuses" there they will not answer your questions ... which is Ok because most of the time the people there have no idea what the answer is anyway, but they will never say. They will run newbies around in circles having them do all kinds of unncessary stuff, because they don't know any better. Apple is dysfunctional ... the same thing happened to all American computer companies. They do not want simple, because then you can do stuff without them, without paying them. I bought my iMac almsot for fun just to see what Apple was like back around 2007, and it was the first machine I had ever had that actually boosted my productivity where I could do what I want, when I wanted. Now I have to continually fight my own machines and Apple. And there is not much alternative ... it is a monopoly with M$ ... ain't capitalism great?

  137. You're right Rick, this is an incredibly well-built song. It is really brilliant and ingenious. It catches my ear, and I rarely hear this kind of music any more because ... no radio ... don't listen to MTV or whatever it is now, don't hang around with kids, and never watched whatever show she came out of ... but, there is one thing that kind of makes it, for me, hard to listen to, that is the lyrics, the message, the attitude of the song ... it is so puerile it's not even as mature or smart as a Monkey's song ... it is dumbed down for a dumb audience. I really like it and it gets my toe tapping, but ... it's like it is a waste of music to me to have such a cool song be so pointless and annoying. It just bugs me. I love it, it's clever and a great song, and I would listen to it if it was on wherever I was, but I would never buy this kind of song. Compare it to that song ... I don't know the name or the artist, but "what is god was one of us, just a slob like one of us" ... silly and deceptively trivial - but that is a song about something. God damn, today's music and culture is just vapid stuff like this engineered to manipulate the brain - but give the listener nothing but more null time in their lives. But I see all the stuff you say ... it's beautiful. ;-) Guess, it's only rock and roll.

  145. Love these videos .... and with comedic moments too! Great! I'm so out of touch, the first one I recognized was 3:45 . Oh yeah ... I am way out of touch, most of these I have not even heard of. One I would have chosen that seemingly would be obvious was Don Henley's , "All She Wants To Do Is Dance", dance dance ... and make romance. That one has total heaviositiousness! Honorable mention would be Jethro Tull "Living In The Past" or "Teacher", but they are not as flashy as your picks for sure.

Hey Rick ... do you ever think you could go back in time and do some of the lesser known, today, LOOONNNGGGG rock guitar solos and musicians like Dave Mason - Look At You, Look At Me, or some of the Eddie Money flash hits ... that guy was really talented, but I wondered whatever become of him, or Allman Brothers Blue Sky, stuff by The Cars. So much good music, so hard to remember it all. Or of course you could feature instruments like the FLUTE with Focus, Jethro Tull, Horslips, REO Speedwagon, Traffic, etc. The music of this period is so great compared to the puffed up artificially sweetened junk food music of today. A little bit later there was the group "Men At Work" who wrote some big hits, but also quite a lot or really good music, and Colin James Hay who is a great songsmith.

  153. Percussive bass. The best in sound engineering at the time for sure. I remember reading somewhere, sometime that they tuned the sound and harmonics to the current technology in automobile sound systems and speakers, and the sound space, so they would resonate with people actually in Cars.

AND ... it is not a great alternative, but for Media and stuff I like the Amazon Fire, and it is much less expensive and you can stick external memory it in too.   170. 46:20 - I never identified with the 10-song thing either, because in the case of most groups, excluding the Police of course ( but not necessarily Sting ) , there was only 1 or 2 good songs, and sometimes no good songs on albums - most albums. Even back then there was a lot of garbage out there. I always used to look for ways to just buy one song, or get used albums to save money - still I spent too much on music.

  196. My way of working with Apple stuff is to put all the disk externally - even the book disk. Then it does not matter what you use inside. I would just by the smallest cheapest version of any machine and load the system partition on a small slice of the disk, and then use that for a cloned, and book from an external SSD, then put all your data stuff on external fast interfaces, as fast as you can. The Westen Digital stuff is about as quiet as you can get, but they will eventually start to grind or squeak so you have to phase them in and out and use them for backups.
